HEAVY EQUIPMENT TRANSPORT

Heavy equipment transport involves the transportation of various forms of construction equipment, some is able to be moved on your normal day to day trucks, whilst some may require the use of abnormal transportation services.

When preparing your equipment for transport, you would need to ask the freighting company about which trucks would need to be used to move your equipment. In some cases, you may be required to de-assemble certain parts of your machinery, in order for it to fit on a trailer and also, bring down the overall cost of transport.

A bearing factor in most transportation projects is height. If your equipment load is too tall, heavy equipment transportation companies may switch you to a low loading trailer, to assist with height restrictions that may crop up on your desired destination route.

Once the heavy equipment transport company has specified which vehicle they will be using to transport your cargo at a reasonable rate, you may began preparing your equipment for transportation. Make sure that if you have any booms, that they are positioned properly for minimal movement. Enquire with your transportation company about any requirements they may have prior to collecting and transporting your equipment.

On large equipment transportation, the sue of abnormal loads will be required as your equipment may exceed some of the legal limits such as height, width and overall weight. On equipment such as bulldozers or wheel loaders, it will be advised that attachments be removed in order for them to fit within specified regulations.

Here are a few tips for preparing your heavy equipment transport load:

  • Over the width limit – Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot that can be done about the width of a vehicle and a larger transportation vehicle may be required.
  • Over the height limit – Remove or retract the booms or buckets that your machinery may have
  • Over the weight limit – This may require that you ship out some parts via other avenues of transportation to reduce some of the land hauling costs.

As much as you may hate to have to tear your machine apart, these are the requirements by transportation law and have to be adhered to. If you are having a hard time with disassembling a machine, you may always refer to the owner’s manual for tips on how to prepare your machinery for transport!

You should also always look at parts that may be fragile whilst in transport, reduce the risk of breakage by simply wrapping fragile bits in bubble wrap! This includes items such as levers, knobs and gauges. Replacing these due to negligence can be extremely costly!
